End of Web 2.0 training

Well it has come to an end and I have learned a lot. There are somethings that I am sure that I will use and others that I will not but it was good to have a chance to examine them all. I now have a better understanding of what some of these components are and how we can help our members with them.

Social networking and Productivity

Don't have much use for social networks personally. Think that they take a lot of time to create and then keep up with. Am concerned with what younger folks put up--ie in the college days and then when they try to remove, have it "haunt" them for the rest of the lives. Figure it is easier not to use in the first place.

Have used an online calendar for several years here at the office. It is great as anyone can update the information, it is available no matter where you are and it is shared by all the staff. Makes it easy to see time off, vacations, where someone is or suppose to be etc. Still have not done away with my paper calendar but have found the online to be very useful.

Well, we have been using delicious for about 2 years now at our branch and have found it to be very beneficial to keep track of websites that we recommend or use.

Catching up.

Been out of the office for some personal/family reasons and am now getting caught up. Do play some games on line. Simply things like Bejeweled and word games. Have never taken the time to explore any of the more involved games and like someone else on my staff, never pay for them.

On social networks, found it interesting to see what could be done with them but don't see them for me. Can the library use to contact members--sure, but I think we need to address the time needed to operate, maintain and respond to our members thru this medium.

Photo sharing

I reviewed the information from this week's lesson and reviewed flickr. Was unable to find any of the photos from the staff day. Since I take very few photos and don't own a digital camera, I don't think that I will be posting much to flickr.

Pod Casts

Not sure how I feel about these. Seems like a lot of time spent to develope them and then a lot of time watching and searching for them. My son posted a video of his new home when he bought it and we were not able to visit, so that was pretty neat. On the other hand, how much time does it take to do all of this and what are people giving up in their lives to be on line all the time??

Twitter and other thoughts

Have had a Twitter account for about a month. At first it was kind of fun to see what other people were doing and thinking. Then it seemed that the people I was following were just putting in a lot of personal items that are not that important to me. Thus have not been following twitter for a couple of weeks and this morning when tried to sign on, could not remember my password and could not get in.

This leads me to a small grip, we have to come up with another sign on and pass word for everything we do on line. I can not keep all these items in my head and need to write them down somewhere. So even though we are doing all these great things online, I, at least, have to have a paper record somewhere with all my pass words/sign ons.

Okay, I'm better. My guru came by and helped me with RSS feed. Now I have a better idea of what it does, how it works and how it can be helpful to us. The 22nd century is looking better and better. On to Twitter.

Read up on RSS feeds. Very interesting but when I went to set up ran into all kinds of problems. Waiting for my resident IT guru to help me. HELP!!!!!!!
